What is AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a global nonprofit organization that operates with one guiding principle: Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge. AVID’s kindergarten through higher education system brings research-based curriculum and strategies to students each day that develop critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas. Learn more about the AVID SYSTEM.

For more than 35 years, AVID has prepared students for college readiness and success. From its beginnings in one classroom with 32 students in San Diego, it now impacts the lives of hundreds of thousands of students throughout the United States and the world. At its sites, AVID affects leadership, systems, instruction, and culture. SEE AVID’S RESULTS and learn how AVID is impacting a school near you.

The AVID College Readiness System works to ensure students are college-ready by equipping them with the skills, academic behaviors, and college knowledge necessary to succeed at every level from elementary school to college. AVID helps students develop a vision for their future, gain confidence in their abilities, and take ownership of their learning.

College readiness refers to the level of preparation a student needs in order to enroll and succeed—without remediation—in a credit-bearing general education coursework at a college or university. According to research done by Dr. David T. Conley, being college-ready means students understand what is expected in a college course, can cope with the content knowledge presented, can take away from the course the key intellectual lessons, and have both the mindset and disposition necessary to enable understanding.

The AVID Program at ALC

Being an AVID student at ALC means being a student who is preparing themselves to succeed in high school and beyond. Beginning in the 9th grade, AVID students are taught proven and necessary skills like Cornell Notes, the AVID binder system, the AVID Tutorial System, and many more tools for success. Over their four years in the AVID program, students are supported through the AVID Elective class with the same cohort of students and trained AVID teacher. AVID students are encouraged to take on a more rigorous class schedule to better prepare them for the rigor of college, including AP, Honors, and Community College classes, and the AVID Elective class, their cohort, and their AVID teacher are there to support them.

The entire time that a student is in the AVID Program at ALC, they are also looking ahead to life after high school. All ALC students are given as much support as they need to make their college selection and application process a success. AVID students receive even more support. Aside from college visits and visits from college representatives, AVID students research the abundant opportunities available and specifically research those schools that match both their intended area of study and everything else they want in a college.

Being a successful high student requires hard work, but it also requires support. and that is what the AVID Program at ALC does for our students.
