About Us » Welcome

Welcome to the online home of the Academic Leadership Community (ALC)! We are an LAUSD Pilot School located just west of Downtown Los Angeles. ALC opened as a Small Learning Community on the campus of the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex, and then reestablished itself as an autonomous high school a few years later when it was chosen to be one of the first Pilot Schools in the school district.
ALC students come from the Historic Los Angeles neighborhoods of Pico-Union, Westlake, Angelino Heights, Chinatown, Koreatown, Echo Park, and Little Tokyo. Year after year, ALC students have been accepted to, and go on to attend, some of the finest colleges and universities in the country, including UCLA, Tufts University, MIT, Barnard College at Columbia, and UC Berkeley to name a few. ALC students have also had some of the highest year-over-year testing improvement scores in the entire school district. ALC students are hard to beat!
ALC also has some of finest and most dedicated teachers you will ever meet. Well over 2/3 of ALC teachers possess a Master's or higher degree, and almost 20% of the teaching staff is Nationally Board Certified or awaiting certification. The ALC teachers, led by Lead Teachers Mike Herrmann and Sandi Drinkward, were responsible for transforming what was at first an AVID program at Belmont High School, into a full- fledged high school. ALC teachers put the needs and future successes of their student's first, and because of this, ALC students go on to do great things.
